NAPEG is responsible for the licensing of professional engineers and professional geoscientists in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, the regulation of the practices of professional engineering and professional geoscience, the establishment and maintenance of standards of knowledge, skill, care and professional ethics among its registrants, in order that the interests of the public may be served and protected.

Practicing Engineering and Geoscience

It is a statutory requirement that professional engineering and professional geoscience only be practiced in the Northwest Territories and/or Nunavut by registrants of the Association.

Only NAPEG registrants are allowed to use the titles "professional engineer", "professional geologist", "professional geophysicist" and "professional geoscientist" in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.  Only registrants of the Association may advertise themselves as professional engineers, professional geologists, professional geophysicists and professional geoscientists in the Northwest Territories and/or Nunavut.

Who are NAPEG's Registrants? 

NAPEG’s registrants work in the private sector, self-employed or as employers, as consultants, in the mining and exploration industry, in the construction and transportation industry, in land development, power generation and telecommunications. They work in government, planning, setting standards, managing and monitoring projects relative to community infrastructure, airports, housing, transportation, mining and explorations.

How to become a NAPEG Registrant?

An accredited degree in engineering, geology or geophysics followed by four years of directly related experience in the practise of engineering, geology and geophysics is the present normal requirement before Council will consider anyone eligible for registration. It is also necessary to pass the National Professional Practice Examination and essay requirement. Registrants become Professional Engineers (P.Eng.), Professional Geoscientists (P.Geo.), Professional Geologists (P.Geol.) or Professional Geophysicists (P.Geoph.).

Obligations and Responsibilities 

The Association requires registrants to be conversant with the Acts, the Bylaws and the Code of Ethics. In addition, registrants are required to make effective provision for meeting lawful standards relating to any work for which they are responsible.

NAPEG also encourages registrants to be involved in the community, to participate in learned societies and to further develop their professionalism. 

Discipline and Enforcement

The Association has discipline and enforcement procedures to deal with matters of professional misconduct or misrepresentation.

The prime objective of the Association is protection of the public. This is accomplished through the Association by ensuring members maintain a devotion to high ideals of professional education, experience, and integrity.  Only NAPEG registrants are permitted to use the titles "professional engineer", "progessional geoscientist", "professional geologist", and "professional geophysicist" in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.
