Course Objective:
One of the goals of the Northwest Territories Geological Survey (NTGS) is to promote the development of energy resources in the Northwest Territories by evaluating resource potential, generating regional and thematic geoscience knowledge to underpin successful exploration, and providing scientific advice to inform policy and regulatory decisions. Various geophysical methods are available to geologists to supplement other geological techniques, principles, and methods to advance this goal. This course is aimed at non-geologists and will provide public awareness of some basic geophysical methods and techniques, and show how these could be relevant to energy exploration in the Northwest Territories.

Course Description:
This course introduces energy geoscience as a multidisciplinary geoscientific endeavour and discusses the availability of known energy resource reserves and potentials in the Northwest Territories. An overview of various geophysical methods will be presented, including seismic, electromagnetic, gravity, geophysical borehole logging, magnetic, and electrical methods. The core of this course focuses, in higher detail, on four geophysical methods: seismic, gravity, electromagnetic (magnetotellurics variant) methods, and geophysical borehole logging. This section of the course will explain the scientific basis for each method in a plain, easy to understand language. Additionally, the physical nature of rocks will be discussed, and how these properties can be exploited by geophysical methods in geologic surveying and energy resource prospecting. The concluding section of the course will focus on the application of combined geophysical methods in geological survey undertakings. A special scenario will be presented on how seismic, gravity and magnetotelluric methods can be combined for geothermal energy resource exploration and development.

Course Instructors/Contributors:
The course instructors/contributors work at the Northwest Territories Geological Survey (NTGS) as geologists and geophysicists.

Yaqub O. Adepoju, PhD., PGeo., PMP, ISSP-SEA. (Yaqub_Adepoju@gov.nt.ca)
Yaqub is the Senior Energy Geologist at NTGS and has valuable industry and private sector experience. He brings expertise in the areas of oil and gas related geophysical research as well as geothermal energy research.

Viktor Terlaky, PhD., PGeo. (Viktor_Terlaky@gov.nt.ca)
Viktor is the Manager of Energy Geosciences at NTGS. His main interests include sedimentology, stratigraphy, marine geoscience, and geologic mapping.

Jonathan Rocheleau, M.Sc., PGeo (Jonathan_Rocheleau@gov.nt.ca)
Jonathan is the Energy Geologist at NTGS. He specialises in geological mapping, clastic sedimentology, stratigraphy, well log interpretation and geomodelling.

Asif Mirza, MSc (Asif_Mirza@gov.nt.ca)
Asif is a Geophysicist at NTGS and he has valuable experience in geophysical data interpretation, QA/QC, and inversion. His special interest is in airborne magnetic, electromagnetic time domain and radiometric field data management/acquisition/processing for mineral deposits survey and bedrock mapping.
